Cote d'ivoire now supplying Electricity to Guinea and Sierra Leone through the WAPP CLSG Interconnection Project
Côte d'Ivoire will now be able to sell electricity to Guinea and Sierra Leone through its power utilities CI-Energies and CIE. The companies EDG and EDSA will represent Guinea and Sierra Leone respectively during transactions.
The signing session of the purchase and sale agreements between the parties were held respectively on November 30, 2021 and December 1, 2021 between Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea on one hand and between Côte d'Ivoire and Sierra Leone on the other hand.
The agreements between these countries are part of the WAPP interconnection project linking Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea by a 225kv line.
It should be recalled that the signing of these contracts is the result of a long process of exchanges and negotiations between the power utilities of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia (LEC) on one hand (buyer) and those of Côte d'Ivoire on the other hand (seller). The WAPP General Secretariat supported the negotiations by providing the parties with legal, technical and financial experts to assist them during the negotiations. Thus, it is after many sessions of negotiations that an agreement was found and that the signing ceremony was organized.
The said ceremony was attended by the Vice-President of Sierra Leone Dr. Mohamed JULDE, the Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Energy of Côte d'Ivoire, Mr. Thomas CAMARA; Minister of Energy of Sierra Leone, Mr. Alhaji Kanja SESAY; Directors General of CI-Energies, CIE, EDG and EDSA; Mr. Noumory SIDIBE, Mr. Ahmadou BAKAYOKO, Mr. Bangaly MATY and Ingr. James ROGERS respectively. The Secretary General of WAPP Mr. Siengui A. KI was also present at the ceremony.
Despite the delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the main infrastructure of the CLSG project to supply Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea has been finalized and powered up from the Main substation (Ivory Coast).
The power purchase agreement between Cote d'Ivoire and Liberia is pending approval by the LEC (Liberia) Board of Directors and will be signed shortly.
