WAPP signs a cooperation agreement with MCC
On June 16, 2021, the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the governments of Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire as part of its new regional energy interconnection program to strengthen electricity market integration between the two countries and the West African energy sector.
The signing of this MoU follows the May 17, 2021 signing of a cooperation agreement between the MCC and the WAPP, a specialized ECOWAS agency in charge of power grid integration and regional electricity market development. The first cooperation agreement of its kind between MCC and a sub-regional institution, it will allow WAPP to conduct a feasibility study and environmental and social impact assessment of the project to strengthen the electricity interconnection between Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire.
It should be noted that this agreement falls within the framework of the African Growth and Opportunity Act of 2018 and the Millennium Challenge Act Modernization Act, which allow MCC to make cross-border regional investments.
